EDITOR'S NOTES: Most of the "essays" in this book appear to have originally been sermons. Thus, the essays are longer than in some of Steele's other books. This is actually the first of Steele's books I ever read, and it has had a profound impact on my subsequent thinking. In fact, the pages are all falling out of my copy. So, finally putting this into text form has been an enjoyable experience — encountering again a text that spoke powerfully to me long ago.
I have compared this text to the text of the PDF version at the Wesley Center, and I can say with confidence that this text is much more reliable.
